Sequence of images showing the break-up of asteroid P 2010 A2. The images are a series of Hubble Space Telescope views of the body and its debris tail, taken by the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 3. Initially thought to be a comet, analysis of Hubble images revealed that the debris tail was not due to outgassing of volatile compounds, as in a comet, but from debris was dust and small rocks formed after a collision with a similar but smaller body. The asteroid itself has a diameter around 150 metres, with the impacting body likely to be up to 100 times smaller.<br>Restrictions: |
