Animation of a total solar eclipse, followed by the removal of the Sun to show the effect of its gravity on the light from stars behind it. This deviation of light caused by gravity was predicted by Einstein's theories of relativity, and the effect was confirmed by Arthur Eddington, who was observing the 29th May 1919 total solar eclipse specifically to look for the effect. Eddington did not remove the Sun, of course, but measured the deviation of the positions of the stars from their normal positions while the Sun's light was blocked by the Moon.<br>Restrictions: |
