The Eagle Nebula (M16 or NGC 6611) is a young open cluster of stars that illuminates its surrounding nebula. In visible light this gives the nebula a pink glow. In infrared, however, this glow is not seen, and the gas and dust of the nebula become much more transparent. The Eagle Nebula is part of a diffuse emission nebula, or HII region, catalogued as IC 4703. The cluster and nebula lie around 6500 light years away from Earth, in the constellation Serpens.<br>Restrictions: |
