Twenty-meter high Turret Arch, one of the thousands of dramatic sandstone formations in Arches National Park, Utah, that show the incredible power of erosion. The sand that makes up the formations was deposited millions of years ago when this area was covered by a vast inland sea. The sand was compressed into sandstone and was then eroded following a massive uplift. Powerful winds, as shown in this clip, continue to erode the formations through the effects of deflation, the lifting away of sand particles; and abrasion, the impact of wind-blown particles against a surface. | |
