Varroa mite (Varroa destructor), macro shot. This parasitic mite is around the size of a pinhead. It feeds on bee's haemolymph fluid (akin to bee blood). Varroa mites attach themselves to foraging bee workers in order to spread themselves from one hive to another. This mite can severely weaken a bee hive through vampire-like action and through the spread of pathogens. An unchecked Varroa mite population will almost certainly lead to the premature death of a honeybee colony. | |
