Miracidium of the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica. This ciliated, non-feeding larval stage has about 24 hours to find its specific snail host, such as Lymnaea truncatula, Fossaria modicella or Stagnicola bulimoides. It then leaves the snail and attaches to vegetation, where it is eaten by a grazing animal. Inside, it migrates to the liver, where it feeds on liver tissue, causing weight loss and anaemia. | |
