Animation of a gas giant extrasolar planet passing in front of its parent star, a red dwarf. This event is known as a transit. Planetary transits are used as a method of detecting planets outside the solar system. If the planet passes in front of its star as seen from Earth, there is a regular and measurable drop in the star's brightness. This can be used to determine many parameters of the planet, including its orbital period, size and mass, and even the composition of its atmosphere. Red dwarves are the most common type of star, although they are so faint that none is visible with the naked eye from Earth. | |
