Light micrography of Serpula lacrymans, one of the fungi that are responsible for dry rot. It is a basidiomycete in the order Boletales. The growth cycle of Serpula lacrymans is extremely complex and can only be seen under a microscope. Although it is a common indoor biodeterioration agent, it has only been found in a few natural environments, the Himalayas, Northern California, the Czech Republic and east Asia. The hyphae in the video clip are suspended in water and recorded using an Olympus BH-2 microscope, 60X S-Plan Apochromat objective, X2.5 NFK photoeyepiece and Nomarski DIC illumination. The horizontal field of view is approximately 200 microns. | |
