A rainbow appears to end directly atop one of the thousands of dramatic sandstone formations in Arches National Park, Utah, an area that owes its beauty to the incredible power of erosion. The sand that makes up the formations was deposited millions of years ago when this area was covered by a vast inland sea. The sand was compressed into sandstone and was then eroded following a massive uplift. Rainbows can occur when sunlight strikes droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. | |
