Located beneath a massive sandstone cliff in northern Arizona is Betatakin, a 13th century Anasazi cliff dwelling that may have housed as many as one hundred people at its peak. It is thought the Anasazi built cliff dwellings to defend themselves from hostile tribes living in the area. This dwelling was occupied less than 50 years and was abandoned about 1300 A.D., possibly in response to a prolonged drought. | |
