Didinium nasutum, a barrel-shaped ciliate carnivore measuring 150-200 microns across, spins about attached to Paramecium caudatum which it had just stabbed with a seizing organ. Inexplicably the Didinium ends its attack and swims away, leaving behind a deformed and dying Paramecium. Recorded under Nomarski DIC illumination. | |
