Treehole mosquitoes (Ochlerotatus triseriatus, formerly Aedes triseriatus) in mesh enclosures in a research laboratory. The treehole mosquito, so named as it breeds in tree holes, is the vector for LaCrosse encephalitis. This is a disease caused by the LaCrosse virus, a type of bunyavirus. The virus has a reservoir in woodland animals such as the chipmunk and tree squirrel, and is spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes. The disease is found in central and eastern North America, and causes headaches, nausea and in severe cases seizures, coma and brain damage. It is fatal in fewer than 1% of cases. It is thought that the incidence of the disease is higher than reported, due to the non-specific symptoms it causes. | |
