Adult monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) emerging from its pupa. When it emerges, its wings are crumpled and its abdomen is filled with fluid. It pumps fluid into its wings to harden them. The bright colours warn potential predators that it is foul-tasting and poisonous. It derives its defensive chemicals from the milkweed plant on which it feeds as a caterpillar. The monarch is native to North America. Its metamorphosis is among the most well-documented of any insect, and its lengthy multi-generational migration has been extensively studied also. Destruction of its habitats has led to a dramatic decline in its numbers in recent years, blamed on agricultural herbicides killing milkweed plants, and illegal logging of its overwintering forests in Mexico. | |
