Black-legged meadow katydid (Orchelimum nigripes) chirping. It created the noise by rubbing its forewings together. One wing, known as the file, has serrated teeth and the other has a scraper. As the insect rubs the scraper along the file the wings amplify the sound. This species is found throughout the midwest and south-central states. | |
