Animation of the primordial Earth surrounded by the ring of rocks and debris from which the Moon formed. The Moon is thought to have formed around 4.5 billion years ago, when a body roughly the size of Mars collided with Earth. The impact melted the surfaces of both bodies, gave much of the impactor's iron to Earth, and threw up a huge amount of debris. This formed a ring around the planet, which coalesced into the Moon. See clip K001/3206 for the impact itself. | |
