Flashing display of an electric clam (Ctenoides ales). The sharp blue-white flashing is produced by the animal rapidly covering and uncovering a band of highly-reflective iridescent tissue along the edge of its mantle. It does not produce its own light, and as it relies on ambient light for its display, it is found only in relatively shallow waters. Its flashing display is unique amongst bivalves, and its function remains a mystery. Filmed in a blue hole in Palau. | |
