Rash on the thigh of a 7 year old female patient with shingles (herpes zoster). This disease is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox - the varicella-zoster virus. When it infects the sensory nerves, it leads to the outbreak of small blisters on the skin supplied by the affected nerves. The blisters usually last for about two weeks, following which the area becomes intensely painful due to nerve damage. The blisters are highly contagious as they contain fluid that contains virus particles. Early treatment with antiviral drugs can help prevent the pain. However, the virus can remain dormant in nerves for years and frequently resurfaces. | |
