Meibomian cyst on the eyelid of a 71 year old male patient. These cysts are also known as chalazions and are caused by the blockage of one of the meibomian glands responsible for lubricating the edge of the eyelid. Chalazions appear as small, inflamed lumps that are usually painless or mildly painful and tend to disappear without treatment. However, in some cases, doctors may prescribe antibiotics to reduce inflammation in the eyelid. If left untreated, larger swelling can put pressure on the eye surface, leading to blurred vision. In such cases, surgical removal of the cyst from behind the eyelid under local anaesthesia may be necessary. | |
