Gouty tophi in the toes of a 61 year old male patient. Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, severe joint pain. If left untreated over a long period of time it can also cause hard lumps called tophi to develop under the skin. Gout is caused by having too much uric acid in your blood. It is more common in older men and sometimes runs in families. Uric acid-lowering medications are the first treatment for most cases of tophaceous gout. More rarely people with large, numerous, or disabling tophi might undergo surgery to remove them. | |
