Necrosis on the head (glans) of a penis in a 61 year old male patient due to calciphylaxis. Calciphylaxis is a rare a condition characterised by the calcification of small blood vessels in the skin. It causes painful skin lesions to form. They typically start as nodules or plaques that progress to become ulcers and may lead to serious complications such as infection and tissue necrosis. Risk factors for this disease include chronic kidney disease, hypercalcemia and diabetes mellitus. The patient in this case is diabetic and has renal failure. Treating calciphylaxis can be challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes wound care, pain management, and treatment of underlying conditions. | |
