Combined coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans showing the brain of a 90 year old man with advanced frontotemporal dementia. This is a condition in which clumps of abnormal proteins form in the frontotemporal (front and side) brain, leading to cell death and brain atrophy (pink). Dementia leads to the deterioration of mental abilities, unusual or irrational behaviour and memory loss. This form particularly affects the ability to produce and comprehend speech, but memory loss tends to occur at a later stage than in more common forms of dementia. There is currently no cure nor means of slowing the progression of dementia, but therapy may be offered to help with speech and movement. | |
