Launch Escape System (LES) for NASA's Project Mercury being lifted on to the a space capsule prior to being mounted onto a Little Joe rocket (in background) for testing. The LES was designed to pull the capsule clear of the rocket in the event of an emergency on launch. Project Mercury took place from 1959 to 1963 and succeeded in putting the first US astronaut in space on 5 May 1961. A total of six missions were flown. Photographed in 1959. | |
