Illustration of swirling clouds in the atmosphere of exoplanet VHS 1256 b. This planet lies 40 light years from Earth in the constellation Corvus. It orbits two stars (top right) that are tightly orbiting each other. It is a huge planet with a mass 19 times that of Jupiter's. Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have shown clouds of silicate particles in the planet's atmosphere that are constantly rising, falling and mixing. Part of this turbulence can be attributed to the planet's relatively young age. At just 150 million years old it is still changing and cooling. | |
