Terracotta Lion headed water-spout, from a house in Eretria of the classic Hellenistic period, 4th c. BC. Such architectural decorations might have served the dual function of embellishing a roof drainage system and being apotropaic, by warding off perceived evils. There was possibly a cultic value in such elaborate motifs and symbols. | |
