Euclid telescope launching on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA, on 1st July 2023. The Euclid telescope is a part of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Cosmic Vision programme. The mission aims to explore the nature of dark energy and dark matter in the universe. The Euclid telescope will create a large-scale map of the universe by observing billions of galaxies. It will explore how the universe has expanded and formed over cosmic history. Dark matter is a hypothesised type of matter. It cannot be detected directly but astronomers know it is there because of its gravitational effects on visible matter. Dark matter appears to outweigh visible by a factor of around 6, making up about 27 percent of the universe. | |
