Gravestone of a retiarius gladiator ready to attack his opponent with a trident. 2nd-3rd C AD. Discernible on his left shoulder is a galerus, or epaulet, while a palm branch or cypress tree frames the scene, symbolising respectively either a prize or transition to post mortem life. Found in a plot in Patras, tentatively interpreted as a mass grave, polyandrion, of four gladiators, as suggested by the skeletal remains | |
