Sunspot observations made on 3rd February 1872 by the French astronomer Gustave Louis Bernaerts (1841-1879). Sunspots, first observed with telescopes in 1610, are areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface. Coronal mass ejections associated with these sunspots caused a large electromagnetic storm on Earth on the 4th February. The storm caused auroras in sky at low latitudes and disrupted telegraph systems. | |
