Stomata in a croton (Codiaeum variegatum) leaf epidermis, polarised light micrograph. Stomata are pores that control the rate of gas exchange in the plant. The opening and closing of the stomata are controlled by semi-circular guard cells (sausage-shaped). When the guard cells are turgid the stomata are open and when they are flaccid the stomata are closed. Magnification: x93 when printed 10 centimetres wide. | |
