Gangrene from peripheral vascular disease (PVD) on a woman's toes. PVD is a slow and progressive circulation disorder. It is caused by a buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels which restricts blood supply, with the legs and feet most commonly affected. When blood cannot travel freely, the tissue can die from gangrene. Gangrene is dangerous and potentially fatal, treatment usually consists of antibiotics and surgery. Treating PVD is largely through lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, dietary changes and moderating alcohol consumption. | |
