Stomata in a hyacinth (Hyacinthus sp.) leaf epidermis, polarised light micrograph. Stomata are pores that control the rate of gas exchange in the plant. The opening and closing of the stomata is controlled by semi-circular guard cells (sausage-shaped). When the guard cells are turgid the stomata are open and when they are flaccid the stomata are closed. Chloroplasts (small circles) are visible in the lower tissue.
