Illustration of the British-US chemist M. Stanley Whittingham (born 1941). Whittingham is best known for his work on the development of lithium-ion batteries. While studying the superconductive properties of titanium disulphide he developed a battery cathode made of titanium disulphide intercalated (layered) with lithium. When combined with a lithium anode the resulting battery had a high energy density and was rechargeable. Whittingham was awarded a share of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work along with Akira Yoshino and John Goodenough. | |
