Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through a rubber fig (Ficus elastica) leaf. Within the upper epidermis (across top), is a lithocyst (dark) containing a cone-shaped cystolith (cream) made of crystalised calcium carbonate on a cellulose stalk. Under the epidermis is the mesophyll layer with chlorophyll cells and vascular bundles.
