Light micrograph of an ovarian follicle, the structure which contains the oocyte, or egg, the female reproductive germ cell, just before its release from the ovary (ovulation). The oocyte (upper centre) is present within an antrum (white space at top) and surrounded by follicular cells, which form a thin layer on top of the oocyte and continue into a thicker layer beneath the oocyte. Beneath the layer of follicular cells are a layer of theca cells (mid portion to bottom of image). The oocyte itself includes of a nucleus and a nucleolus (light purple circle containing a dark purple dot), surrounding cytoplasm (light purple) and the zona pellucida, the pink band around the outermost area of the oocyte just under the surrounding layer of follicular cells. | |
