Light micrograph of the cells making up a sebaceous gland. Sebaceous glands are normal parts of human skin and they produce and secrete sebum, which is an oily substance that helps lubricate and protect the skin surface. The sebaceous cells have nuclei (dark round blue circles) surrounded by cytoplasm containing many vacuoles (white, bubble-like circles). The vacuoles contain the substances that are to be secreted. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x600 when printed at 10cm wide. | |
