Light micrograph of nerve ganglion cells (pale blue-grey in centre of image) of the myenteric plexus (also known as Auerbach’s plexus). The ganglion nerve cells function to create peristaltic movements which keep food and bowel contents moving forward through the gastrointestinal tract. The nerve cells of the myenteric plexus are located in between the outer and inner smooth muscle layers (pink, top half and bottom half of image) of the bowel. Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10cm wide. | |
