Illustration of type I amyloid-beta filaments ending at residue 42 from human brains. Misfolded amyloid beta peptides aggregate and form amyloid plaques that are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease. Type I filaments are found mostly in the brains of individuals with sporadic Alzheimer’s disease. The normal function of amyloid beta peptide, which is cleaved from the transmembrane amyloid precursor protein (APP), is unknown.
