Illustration of the Sun shining through one of the plumes from an ice volcano on Triton. Triton is the largest moon of the planet Neptune. Triton's surface is one of the coldest in the solar system, with temperatures of minus 235 degrees Celsius. It has a tenuous atmosphere of mostly nitrogen. Triton's surface is covered with nitrogen ice which is very clear, and sunlight penetrates through and warms the ice enough for it to erupt. The erupting plumes rise about 8 kilometres, and are blown by the prevailing winds up to about 150 kilometres. Due to the ice crystals in the streaks from the rising plumes, sunlight is being refracted forming an icebow. Triton is 355, 000 kilometres from Neptune, which is itself around 4.5 billion kilometres from the Sun.
