Light micrograph of a chronic inflammatory granuloma (centre) in a foot tissue sample from a patient with eumycetoma. Eumycetoma is a fungal infection of the subcutaneous tissue (deepest layer of skin). The infection leads to the formation of a granuloma, a cluster of white blood cells at the site of an infection that occurs as a result of the body's immune response. In later stages destruction of deeper tissues may occur, causing deformity and loss of function. Treatments include long-term antifungal medication. Sample stained by the haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) method. | |
