Paranal Observatory at sunset. The foreground silhouette is of one of the four VLT Auxiliary Telescopes. This array of 1.8-metre telescopes works alongside the Very Large Telescope with each telescope having the ability to be moved to a different position on the ground depending on the requirements of each observation. The light from these telescopes is fed into the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) which is used for many observations of protoplanetary discs and star systems. High above the telescope, the Moon, less than a quarter full, shines brightly through the thin clouds. | |
