| Light micrograph of chromosomes (brown) from a muntjac deer (Muntiacus sp.) that have condensed prematurely. From left to right the cells are in the G1, S (synthesis) and G2 stages of interphase. During these stages the cells grow, replicate their organelles and synthesise a full complement of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Chromosomes, which consist of DNA and proteins normally condense during prophase, the first stage of mitosis (nuclear division), which occurs after interphase. Silver stain. | |
