New Zealand mountaineers and explorers Joseph Holmes Miller (1919-1986, left) and Edmund Hillary (1919-2008, right) digging out oil drums dropped from the air during training for the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE) in New Zealand. Miller was deputy leader of the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team for the CTAE, under Hillary. In 1958 the CTAE became the first expedition to successfully complete an overland crossing of Antarctica, via the South Pole. Photographed in November 1956. | |
