Aspergillus is a genus consisting of many mould species found in numerous habitats. Aspergillus is also common in the home, including bedding. Some species of aspergillus can cause illness in humans and animals. Most people are naturally immune and generally only individuals with immunodeficiency are susceptible. A. fumigatus, a saprotroph widespread in nature, is typically found in soil and decaying organic matter, such as compost heaps, where it plays an essential role in carbon and nitrogen recycling.
