Gluteus maximus, illustration. The gluteus maximus muscle is very important in walking and is the main extensor of the hip. It is shown arising from the iliac fossa and inserting into the iliotibial tract, and deeper into the gluteal tuberosity of the femur (not seen). At its upper lateral aspect the fascia of the deeper gluteus medius is shown. Below its inferior margin is the fascia of the hamstrings. Intramuscular injections into the gluteal region are given in the upper outer quadrant to avoid injury to the sciatic nerve. From Lizars, J. 1823 A system of anatomical plates of the human body. W.
