Illustration of a coronal plane view of the kidney, the medulla showing seven renal pyramids separated by renal columns with blood vessels. Urine collected from the pyramids passes into minor then major renal calyces in continuity with the large renal pelvis (blue-grey). This leads to the ureter, which carries the urine to the bladder. Many of the kidney glomeruli are found in the outer renal cortex. The calyces are opened to show their association with the apices of the pyramids.
