Melasma on a woman's face. Melasma, or chloasma, is characterised by discoloured patches on the skin. It is caused by a localised increase in the dark skin pigment melanin. The condition often occurs during pregnancy, as a side effect of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications. The patches usually occur on the forehead, temples and cheeks and are harmless. | |
