When powdered solid ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3) is added to a beaker containing 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl), bubbles of carbon dioxide gas are produced: HCl + (NH4)2CO3 -> NH4Cl + CO2 + H2O. This is an example of a carbonate-acid reaction, which in itself is a double-replacement reaction followed by a decomposition reaction. | |
