Ringer in vacuum, 1 of 2. A classic experiment demonstrating that sound propagates in elastic media, such as gases (ex. air) or solids, and cannot propagate in vacuum. An electrical alarm is secured through rubber feet inside a vacuum bell. Initially the sound of the alarm is heard. When a connected vacuum pump removes air from inside a vacuum bell, no sound of the alarm is heard. | |
