Ringer in vacuum. A classic experiment demonstrating that sound propagates in elastic media, such as gases (ex. air) or solids, and cannot propagate in vacuum. An electrical ringer is secured through rubber feet inside a vacuum bell. Initially, at atmospheric pressure, the sound of the ringer is clearly heard. When a connected vacuum pump reduces the pressure inside the bell, the sound of the ringer becomes progressively quieter. When vacuum is reached, the sound completely disappears. | |
