The radial velocity method to detect exoplanets, also called doppler spectroscopy, is based on the detection of variations in the velocity of a star due to the changing gravitational pull from a planet as it orbits the star. When the star moves towards the observer, its spectrum is blueshifted, while it is redshifted when it moves away from the observer.
