Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the ultrastructure of a luteal cell of the ovary. Luteal cells synthesise steroid hormones, chiefly progesterone and also oestrogen. Steroidogenic cells typically show many mitochondria, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and variable content of lipid inclusions, seen here as circular cytoplasmic droplets. Steroids secreted by luteal cells of the corpus luteum prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy, and regulate and suppress follicle development.
